1) Burke wrote this, as I remember it, having secured a position in Parliament, for.. was it Bristol and Bath? He used this comment, to explain why he would vote in parliament according to his principles, rather than the wishes of his voters. on the subsequent election, he lost his seat, so the workings of democracy resolved this particular difference of opinions.
