Web surfing is just fine. Playing YouTube and any compressed video is fine, definitely no Apple Quicktime Trailers over 480p. Photoshop and video editing will take time. If that's your main reason, just get a regular laptop.

EEE PC 1000? That looks exactly like my 901. Tiny Keyboard, 9 inch screen. 1000 has a 10 inch screen. Plus they Keyboard is bigger and looks different. Plus they don't offer a 1000 with XP. You have to install it yourself.

Yes, they're practically the same, except I found it impossible to type (normally) on any keyboard smaller than a 10". If you have small, womanly hands or if you peck'n'type, then the 9" is for you. I traded in my 1000 for a 1000HE, and love the new keyboard, with the chicklet, Apple Macbook-style keyboard. For $400, it's great. If I had $1200, I'd get a Mac, anyway, and load up 3 OSes, rather than just 2.

See my video for WinXP Boot time (around 40 seconds, with login). Ubuntu (Eeebuntu Netbook Remix) loaded up less than that! I'd choose between the 1000 and the 1000HE depending on whether you want (respectively) Linux vs. WinXP as the included OS; speedy drive (SSD) vs. more storage (160GB HD), and finally, check out the differences in the keyboards between the two. On 1000 vs. HE, the right shift key is placed differently next to the arrow key, which annoys some, but doesn't bother others.

that looks fantastic. im really hooked on the asus eee 1000. probably will buy one soon. what was the initial load time with eeebuntu installed on the original partition? what did you need windows for, btw?

38 seconds on the original SSD. I need Windows for corporate intranet remote desktop stuff, and just to have flexibility with any client's needs. My next computer will be a Mac, simply because I need another OS, and even my wife uses VM now for her consulting (WinXP Pro VM in Parallels -- easy as pie, and easy to back up!)
