It's also mentioned in the recent Sonic Generations game when he is referred to as Dr. Robotnik, he responds with "Nobody calls me that anymore."

While he was always called Eggman in Japan, current renditions of the character (post-Sonic Adventure) going by the name Eggman is in fact an alias he goes by and his real name is Dr. Ivo Robotnik. The two names have merged and Eggman is officially just a nickname . Yuji Naka confirmed this in an interview once, saying that Sonic was most likely the one who originally called him Eggman as a joke. He's adopted it as an alias.
