There actually are not only timing marks but a simple piece of flat metal will lock the cam in place, just take the valve cover off, the slots are at the end of the cams. Seeing as the original belt was on, despite the condition you could make reference marks with a paint pen.
"How much did he pay for this job?" Too much cause I gaurentee if you didnt use the cam lock tool, you had the timing off, and seeing as that is an interference engine, I wish you a happy head replacement...

@asetech76 Exactly - the reason Ford doesn't use timing marks is they're not as accurate as using locking tools. Counting teeth is even worse.
