This video demonstrates the viewing angles of an LCD monitor using a TN panel. The monitor is a 20" Dell model 2009W. Keep in mind the LCD is displaying a solid color (purple) image. This is not a gradient image, yet it appears to be because of the small viewing angles TN panels provide. See http://www.pchardwarehelp.com/guides/lcd-panel-types.php to learn more about the different LCD panel technologies and which is right for you.

  • is VA panel just as bad or a little better?

  • VA panels have much better viewing angles when compared to TN. Similar to IPS, though they also have a fault known as color shifting or black crush which causes a loss of image detail in dark scenes.

  • @PhuckHue2 agreed. I had a Dell E228WFP... Not that bad if you compare to other LCD-s, but AWFUL compared to a NEC FE950+ (CRT), which i have now.

  • I have IPS myself so I don't have exactly a reason to defend TNs, but when I did this same test on my monitor, I gotta say the video camera worsens the effect quite a lot and even adds some colorshifting that just isn't there in real life.

  • @ PhuckHue2,

    which model?

  • lol, very bad monitor.

  • As long as i get the quality that i want, i'll cash out quite a bit. Looking at my LG TN Panel while viewing movies in the dark is just not pretty.

And i do that a lot. The backlight-bleeding and contrast are just awful. When more people finally realize that a little investment really pays off then eventually the prices will come down.

But unfortunately most people are just too cheap and in most cases don't know the differences or don't care about them.

  • how do you know which panel is VA or TN?
