Here I show off what I have been working on during my spring break. I managed to score an AppleTV on the cheap and have been trying to get HD video to play correctly.
Parts of this video are blurred due to copyright issues however you will still get to see the quality of the video by the screenshots.
Here is my blog entry detailing step by step how to achieve the same video playback on your AppleTV. http://tinyurl.com/c3vg39
Postbreak, nice setup. My AppleTV right now streams video from my external HD to XBMC, but the hard drive has to be connected to my computer, it's a macbook pro. what's your setup where you're using a network drive? I tried but it doesn't work right, I'm using one of the newer Airport Extreme base stations. Thanks man

Do you have it modified with XBMC and is NitoTV installed? You need them both to setup an AFP share. Check into awkwardTV's wiki for how to do so.

Questions...
1) Whats the resolution of the video?
2) Whats the bitrate of the video?
3) How big(MB) is the video?
4) You say you upgraded the HDD. Did the video work well when you streamed it off the network... before your upgraded?

The video is 1056x592 at 4.3GBs, and 6000kbps bit rate. It looks exactly like the source of 1024x720 with over 10,000kbps.
The hard drive was upgraded to 100GB but mostly for the 5400rpm instead of the 4200rpm it ships with. The UI is much snappier with the new hard drive.
I can stream the HD video over N to a networked hard drive just fine with no slow down. The only pain is converting the video.

I paid $10 more for something that has wireless N, includes boxee so I can watch Hulu and other internet TV, and has a nice gui.
