Time for the last fourteener climb of the summer, and this one is no walk in the park.
Longs Peak is one of the most unmistakable features of the Colorado Front Range, so much so that it is depicted on the Colorado quarter. It towers at 14,255 feet above Rocky Mountain National Park. Unfortunately we picked a day when the weather didn't cooperate, so we didn't get to see the spectacular views off its flat summit. But the weather at least added some excitement to an already grueling and heart-pounding climb.
We left at 2:10AM and began climbing the 7.5 miles and over 5,000 vertical feet to reach the summit. The final mile has all of the technical scrambling with many places where a fall could easily be your last. The mountain decided to throw some rain and sleet at us for the final few feet, but we pulled off a safe ascent. We didn't spend much time at the summit as there was nothing to really see. We quickly began the difficult descent over rain-slicked granite. Thankfully we descended with no injuries and finished off the remaining hike back to the trailhead under beautiful sunny skies. Definitely a memorable day!
