From the beginning of the construction, tourists would arrive and ask if they could help out. Each had their own reasons: some wanted to learn new skills or to help in an environmentally friendly project; others hoped to practice Spanish or make a difference in a diverse community. People came with a wide spectrum of skills; we welcomed carpenters, cooks, electricians, painters, web-designers and permaculturists, among others. They were offered a room in exchange for 4 hours of work a day and some stayed for months at a time, contributing to the hotel and enjoying all the opportunities in San Marcos. This project is still thriving. The low season (September to December) is the best time for creative people to stay and work with us. I stayed in this hotel for a month and loved it. The owner was a real sweetie and we had the same taste in music. There was one room that had a boulder that separated the main room from the bathroom but I can't find an image of it online. I'm wondering if they reconstructed it or if it still exists but is not rented out. Anyway, it was my favorite room. I read online about a year ago that the hotel was up for sale. Wish I had the money to buy it and continue to build it. Ahh, Lake Atitlan!
