New York, Aug. 25, 2009: TIP hosted Israels Ambassador to the U.N. Gabriela Shalev for an invitation-only, on-the record private press lunch and briefing in New York City. After a brief introduction in which Amb. Shalev spoke to the packed room of journalists about a variety of topics such as Israels desire for peace and the adversity Israel faces in the United Nations; Amb. Shalev outlined the build-up of hostility towards Israel as increasing numbers of Arab countries were admitted to the United Nations. In the ensuing, free-flowing conversation, with journalists from top U.S., Arab, British and Israeli outlets. Amb. Shalev deftly fielded questions about settlement freezes, Hezbollah, the fact that the Iranian threat is not just an Israeli concern and a possible meeting between Netanyahu and Abbas in December.

The event was filmed by two camera crews, one from Al-Arabiya, the other from FOX; both outlets had UN bureau chiefs also in attendance. One bureau chief said later, Just to let you know, [our outlet] actually included in the news bulletins last night and today, headlines from the briefing organized by you. A UN correspondent commented, The ambassador was a pleasure to speak with. I think the briefings are conducted very well and they are increasing my understanding of the issues facing Israel and the world. Thanks again for the wonderful opportunity. An editor wrote, Thank you for including [my outlet] in another very interesting discussion.

The journalists in attendance included UN correspondents, producers and bureau chiefs from outlets including the AP; the New York Times; Al-Arabiya; Reuters; AFP; the Wall Street Journal; Bloomberg; BBC; VOA; Fox News; CNN; CNBC; the LA Times; the Financial Times; Newsday; and Haaretz.

Amb. Danny Carmon and TIP donor Andrew Tisch also attended the event.
