The Harvey B. Gantt Center for African-American Arts + Culture in Charlotte has a 35-year history beginning as Charlotte's Afro-American Cultural Center. Today, its new location at the Levine Center for the Arts is the permanent home for the John and Vivian Hewitt Collection, which includes 58 works by 20 renowned artists including Charlotte natives Romare Bearden and Charles Austin, along with Henry Ossawa Tanner, Elizabeth Catlett, Jonathan Green and Jacob Lawrence.The Gantt features educational programs around art, music, dance and special events like poetry slams. Its exterior features patterns meant to evoke quilt designs and woven textile patterns from West Africa.
