This is Ras Alan addressing the students at Ruseas High School in Lucea, Jamaica. Ras Alan is an Appalachia Reggae musician, artist, organic gardner and all round good guy. He has had his work preserved in the Smithsonian Institution and is helping my friend Libre start a free school of tourism in Jamaica that places emphasis on preserving the Jamaican culture and heritage. You can find out more about Ras Alan here: http://www.appalachianreggae.com/
It was during this visit that we realized that this school of 2,200 children had only a very small selection of books in their library! Since then, we have facilitated to donation of hundreds of books to this school as well as art supplies and musical instruments. This entire effort was funded by friends and grew considerably when the Little Feat Band joined us in our efforts.
We orignially shot this footage hoping to create a reality tv show about people going on service vacations around the world and doing good work. It didn't work out this time (we're not exactly film makers) but I haven't given up on the idea.
In the Appalachia mountains of North Carolina and Tennessee.
