  • Wow! Cossotto is fabulous she sounds insane while sining this aria. I also love her as Ameneris in Aida.

BTW The 3 Greateast Verdi Mezo/Contralto roles are in order:

    1)Ammeneris fron Aida.

    2)Azucena From Trovatore

3)Ulrica from Un Ballo a Maschera

I'll also put in Mistress Quickly from Falstaff as #4.

  • Fiorenza!! Maravillosa

  • @simercutio99; in fact there is an early recital-album, available again which has the "voce di donna" , but as far as I know she never sang the role on stage! But she did Laura until 1988!

  • è vero il registro acuto è andato,ma lei rimane fantastica,come interpretazione è fantastica

  • @WeicheWotan I think I accidently confused her with Ewa Podles or the fact some mezzos do take contralto roles since Contraltos are rare.

  • @sirmercutio99 I know of no recording of Cossotto singing La Cieca. She did sing Laura Adorno to Callas' Gioconda in the 1959 recording from La Scala. That role seemed to suit her true mezzo voice and fiery temperament perfectly.

  • @clement2780 I've never heard Garanca sing them. I love Mezzo/Contraltos cause the real good roles are rare and it takes alot of to sing them. Contraltos are very rare these days, although mezzos take most of there roles. Did Cossotto ever sing the mother from La Gioconda?

  • I was in the audience for these performances of IL TROVATORE during von Karjan's return to the Wiener Staatsoper...Pavarotti was Manrico and Leontyne Price was Leonora....Christa Ludwig alternated the part . Cossotto was phenomenal as well.

  • Great singing but where's the rest of it? There's about 20 seconds cut out of the scene.

  • I also think Azucena is the most important mezzo role from Verdi. After all she has 2 magnificent arias whereas Amneris has no real aria (although she has 2 great duets and a big scene at the end!)
