The string instrument is the Gonjey, which is an indigenous type of violin found in many parts of Western Africa. The rattles are made out of Calabash with stones inside.
I recorded this in the Upper region of Ghana, West Africa.

  • Thanks so much for sharing this video africanbushdoctor! Is this the Gonjey of the Frafra people or that of Dagbon like in the other clip?

(the last comment didn't turn up on the page, so I'm reposting it again)

  • Frafra is what some would call these people, which I would view as being incorrect. Frafra is a colonialist term given to a subset of Gurunsi peoples living in northern Ghana and their language.

  • That's very true. I don't understand why the "Frafra" term is still officially used; even I was affected!

Some of my late Great-Grandfather's side are Gurunsi, originally from Upper East (Paga area), some with Hausa admixture, but since the time of my Great-Grandfather, there's been a lot of intermixing and nowadays most of us are Hausa speakers. But it is nice to see and hear pure northern cultural music on here, and now I know this Grunsi, watching this brings me closer to my roots! Thanks!!

  • I shoot this near Paga.

    Thans for your nice comments!

  • No they are not Islamic at all. Footage will be available in the near future, I'll keep you posted.

  • Thank you. I'm very happy I found your posts. They've been a great influence & source of inspiration. I'd like to adapt a tune (or two) to banjo & see how that works. Any Idea where I can find one of these violins? Thanks again.
