Depressing and stressful to watch at times, but interesting enough to be worth watching. I would recommend it to both mecha fans and non mecha fans, since the story revolves around the people's backgrounds more than the robots. Great anime and manga is really good too :) Totally recommend it to anyone looking for an interesting psychological series!

Kino's Journey and Haibane Renmei come to mind... though nothing is quite like Bokurano.
When it comes to manga the closest thing I can think of is Eden: It's an Endless World!
If anybody has any better / similar suggestions let me know. D:

Try actually watching it. This is very far from Evangelion. I've watched both series all the way through, and it's nothing like Eva.
