LIMBANG: A Miri-based cargo lorry crossing Sungai Temburong partially fell into the river while heading from Temburong district of Brunei to enter Sarawak through the Pandaruan ferry crossing here yesterday.

The river separates Limbang from the Temburong district of Brunei.

The incident resulted in the suspension of the ferry service, causing jams on both sides of the river as the rear of the lorry was stuck in the river while the Prime Mover (lorry head) was suspended in mid air with the front portion of the trailer.

In the 9am incident, the rear of the vehicle fell off the ramp and slid backwards down the river while the unfortunate driver managed to jump out in time and shout for help. Eyewitnesses said it could be due to brake failure or human error.

According to Osman Mohd Daud, operation chief of ferry operator Koperasi Pengangkutan Bersatu Temburong Tanggungan Berhad, the huge vehicle suddenly moved backwards and slid into the water while the ferry was cruising in direction of Pandaruan.

According to him, the brake lights lit up before it slid into the water, suggesting that the driver tried in vain to halt the vehicle as it moved backwards.

Meanwhile, works were in progress to lift the vehicle from the river so that the ferry service could to resume. A mobile crane had been ordered from Limbang to help pluck it out.

We expect our ferry services to be temporary suspended for about six hours. This is the first time I have come across such an incident since this ferry has been in operation since 1997, he said.

Two ferry service providers are serving this narrow river crossing - with one each from Temburong and Limbang taking respective turns to operate between 6 am to 9 pm daily.

Meanwhile, Limbang OCPD Supt Landi Ilot confirmed the incident which was reported at 10am yesterday.

It was due to the failure of the driver to control the vehicle and he had already lodged a report at Limbang police station an hour after the incident, he said.

Meanwhile, hundreds of vehicles on both sides of the border were caught in a mass traffic jam due to the incident. Some vehicles decided to turn back rather than waiting for the service to be restored.

As at press time (5.30 pm yesterday), the lorry had yet to be lifted out of the water. The nature of cargo inside the trailer is not immediately known

Free tol lagi.
