i was watching fail compilations, but this is way more cool than that!

@arktik75 could you please tell me the concentrations (ammonia and FeCl3/FeCl2 mixture)?
i think i should use diluted solutions. isn't it?

Goku is under there!

How many ounces of this stuff do you have there? buying 4 oz costs like $50, so if i need more to have fun with this stuff I would like to know.
-
can you touch it?
-
what happens if you touch it ? :O I have such an urge to !!

@arktik75 Tried the veggie oil and micro toner with neonyd magnets and, like every other iron filing and oil combo, it separates out after a while. Chemically doesn't do anything...good point. Did it with oleic acid/ ammonia/ kerosene/ ferric chloride and bam: worked like a charm. Thanks for posting this vid! Helped a lot.

If you touch the spikes, does it break surface tension?

i was watching drifting vids

how the hell did i get here from watchin lobster videos??
Drop the ammonia over the mixture drop by drop and at the same time stirr the solution.
The precipitate will turn red first then brown and finaly black after you poured al the necesary ammonia. Then heat it for half hour at about 90 to 100 degrees celsius. If you want to wash the particles it's fine, use distiled water.

@arktik75 You do relize that there is a way easier way to make ferrofluid.. You just and MICR toner to vegi oil and BAM! you have it....

@shelly827 You do realize that you know nothing about ferrrofluids and magnetorheological liquids..there is no such thing as ferrofluid made of toner and vegi oil.

vegi oil + toner

@hexusziggurat that is no real magnetic fluid..it's simply a mud try for yourself and you'll see.The particles will settle after a day or so or if you keep the magnet underneat the recipient .A real magnetic fluid is homogenous ultrastable(particles do not settle even in high magnetic field)

The procedure for making Fe3O4 (magnetite) nanoparticles:
Mix 2 parts FeCl3 and one part FeCl2(solutions of equal concentration).
Keep the solutions at cold over night, only few degrees over 0 C.Use ammonia instead of NaOH.
