In Louis Malle's captivating and philosophical My Dinner with Andre, actor and playwright Wallace Shawn sits down with friend and theater director Andre Gregory at an Manhattan restaurant, and the two proceed into an alternately whimsical and despairing confessional on love, death, money, and all the superstition in between. Playing variations on their own New York-honed personas, Shawn and Gregory, who also wrote the screenplay, dive in with introspective, intellectual gusto, and Malle captures it all with a delicate, artful detachment. A fascinating freeze-frame of cosmopolitan culture, My Dinner with Andre remains a unique work in cinema history.

  • I saw the IMAX 3D version. It felt like Andre's subtle hand gestures were coming right at me.

  • I'm so sick of this anti-American nonsense at every turn. A great deal of American cinema-goers prefer a film like this.. Cheers

  • @chapuchapuppy I love it.

  • @surfwaxafghani The modern school of acting comes from European refugees and expats (Ute Hagen, Strasberg, et al).

Many of the great directors from America's "golden age" were also European refugees--Cortez, Lubitsch, Lang, etc.

  • Community brought me here

  • @captainjapan101 Captain - never heard that interpretation before and MDWA is one of my favorite films. Did you get that from somewhere - a critic? Or think it up? Ken

  • The sunset limited by Cormac McCarthy reminds me of this. Albeit a lot darker

  • @robotwookie exactly, america knows good though, our movies are popular worldwide, our degree of freedom over the years has allowed us to experiment and see things much differently and more idealized than any other country. that' is why our cinema is so popular.

  • @whattf73 Me too!!!

  • Everybody's postings are missing the important point of the film.

Andre is educated, successful, supportive, and completely full of life.

The sequence of Andre's stories culminate to a Satantic cultist encounter.

Andre is actually Death stalking Shawn.

By endlessly talking to get Shawn to counter intuitively realize his life and how he had been detrimental to people's lives and that it's coming to an end.

    Please comment, certain about this.
