The song is about Maynard's mom. She had a cerebral aneurysm when Maynard was 11. Before the incident and to her death she was a devout Christian, much to Maynard's chagrin. Maynard lost his faith as a kid because of the event. He has described seeing his mom broken and helpless in her hospital bed and asking why god let his happen. Sad story really.

god failed to stop Maynard's mom from having the aneurysm and he fails to intervene with all suffering in the world. i don't understand why people say that he's a loving god when he watches and does nothing. why would anyone worship such a being.
