This would be the seventh score in the franchise, and long time Next Generation composer Dennis McCarthy would come aboard to score this movie. If there was a problem with this score it would be that most of it is very subdued. Even the main title sequence which is normally a place where each composer lays out their main theme for the movie in all it's glory is virtually non existent here.

It isn't until the final few moments where we are treated to Alexander Courage's fanfare that the score truly does work. It's in Courage's fanfare where the score really excels. Most of the score is very bland and not much to talk about other than the use of Courage's fanfare. Even the overture suite while adequate does pale in comparison to the other suites that have been created for the franchise. This a forgotten score in the franchise, and I wouldn't say it deserves to be forgotten, but there isn't enough material here that I would recommend to anyone.

  • Generations was Good.

    First Contact was excellent.

    Insurrection was OK.

Nemisis was an insult to the entire franchise.

NOW we have a NEW franchise where they start off by killing 85 billion Vulcans in the first movie???

Is THAT what they are offering us Trekkies? A "alternate Time Line" movie franchise where the ENTIRE history of the Federation that we have come to know and love is GONE!!??

Can someone explain this to me?

  • This film is one of Patrick Stewart's best performances. Which is really saying something since he's a damn fine actor.

  • I think people miss the point here. The theme was very ethereal because of the heavenly / spiritual themes in the movie that deal with afterlife and rebirth. Your chance to do things again etc. This beautiful piece runs through the film.

@krazie835: That's because this video track has low volume, and it might be low quality, too.

Tastes aside (I actually value this score as one of the best of Trek), then the great part of it is that its theme is subtle and endearing, and thus deviates from the bravado some ppl expect of a grand science fiction movie. Thinking of the score for A.I., I get the impression that John Williams might have had a rather inspirational listen of this :-)

  • @ nay sayers of Star Trek 2009 "Having received all your letters over the years, and I've spoken to many of you, and some of you have travelled...you know... hundreds of miles to be here. I'd just want to say.......GET A LIFE! will you people?"

  • In the first season episodes of ST: TNG, Picard states bluntly that we (Humanity) succeeded in recovering because were not interfered with. We as a people, were allowed to solve our own squabbles and rebuild our world, fixing all the poisons and toxins the wars created, and to get back on our own feet. And yet, in ST: FC, Riker tells Cochrane that after he makes his warp flight in 2063-64, “…everything will start to get better”.

  • @ThoughtTraveler

Are you saying 85 or 8.5 Billion Vulcans? The former seems improbable, the latter closer to a reasonable number, though a bit high considering that Vulcan is a desert world. As to ST-VI’s alternate time line, not to mention the one in ST-Enterprise, both seem discordant with everything. I am not a Trekkie, I have never been to a star trek, or any other ST event. Gene’s death left a vacuum that was not properly filled. Sadly, there are some real problems with the franchise,

  • @L5Animations JJ's Trek neglected a critical part of its ST heritage: it had more logical plot holes due to scientific inconsistency than Star Trek V - and that's sad! Now before anyone starts with the "who cares about science and shit, it looked awesome," let me remind you that classic Trek's DNA was embedded in sound science FACT that spring-boarded smart science FICTION... and this is what's sad about JJ's Trek: it caters to a populace that isn't smart enough to know the difference.

  • @ThoughtTraveler

Not all gone you still have Captin Archer.

  • The problem with this score, which reflects the film itself, is that there isn't a clear theme. Seriously, amidst all the textured layers of slumbering melody, where are the decisive notes that make the theme punch through clearly and without mistake... yep, that's what I thought...

  • the latest star trek film in my opinion can not hold a candle or should i say phaser to the origenal star trek or the next generation. rick Berman worked with Gene rodenberry and he understood Genes vision of star trek better than any one.

  • @gor125 Give me a good reason why it sucks. 'Cause let me tell you, a lot of people are going to get pissed at you. Best defend your position.
