Né le 5 janvier 1929 à Charlotte en Caroline du Nord, Wilbert Harrison est connu pour avoir composé en 1959 la chanson "Kansas City" qui a connue dès sa sortie, un succès énorme puisque plus d'un million d'exemplaires ont été vendus sur la seule année 1959. Le guitariste régulier de Wilbert Harrison, Wild Jimmy Spruill, a participé pleinement au succès de "Kansas City" en signant l'un des solos les plus mémorables de l'histoire du Rock'n Roll.
La chanson "Kansas City" a été reprise par de nombreux groupes et interprètes parmi lesquels ont trouve notamment les Beatles.
Après ce premier succès, Wilbert Harrison a continué de se produire sur scène et d'enregistrer mais ce n'est que 10 ans plus tard qu'il renouera avec la consécration en enregistrant un nouveau succès en 1969 avec sa chanson "Let's Work Together" reprise par de nombreux groupes, comme Canned Heat qui en a fait un tube dans une version légèrement modifiée. Wilbert Harrison est décédé le 26 octobre 1994 à Spencer en Caroline du Nord. En 2001, il a reçu le Grammy Hall of Fame Award pour son succès "Kansas City"

  • met wilbert in the mid 70s in a bar in newark nj, he and i had a beer and he sang kansas city a few times and he joked around with a light bulb that would light when he put in on peoples heads, today his son wibert harrison jr came in my record store looking for a 45 record of kansas city on fury label, i had one, we listened to it and he rememberd his dad with storys, it was a pleasure meeting him as well as his dad, days like this make me glad i kept my record store open.....

  • @jpoe141 You are a lucky man to have met Wilbert Harrison and his son. Some people have a fabulous story and I think that was the case of Wilbert Harrison. I 'm sure his son had many anecdotes to tell you on his father.

  • Looka here,Looka here..This was the version that was hitbound to happen and did just that at THE BIG 8 CKLW in 1969.Met Wilbert in his latter yeaes at The VA Hospital in Salisbury,N.C.where he lived until his passing RIP WILBERT..

  • Personally, I prefer Canned Heat's version. I'm not really into that "THIS IS THE BEST BECAUSE IT IS THE ORIGINAL" shit. I just prefer the tempo. Though, this is awesome.
