I liked the ending. On the whole I thought it was a lovely film.

Agreed, I over reacted a little when I first watched it. On reflection, the ending really isn't as bad as I thought it was. I just wanted the animation to carry on because its so damn good

I believe the ending is actually better than you think. She was dead. She was in limbo trying to take her entire life's possessions with her. The others were dead too, but they were corrupt and so could not escape the demons. She had a chance to leave because she was a good person and she was able to escape the train, but she had to leave all the baggage from her life behind in order to run. Then she traveled through the tunnel and headed towards the light. Happy ending.

The way I saw it; M.T.P started the journey carrying all the burdens through life she can't let go of, and the train ride for the most part showed her (in a sense) remembering all the past things in her life in various ways. In the end she follows the little flying insect beyond all her problems, and in turn "transforms" into something more. She goes from pupa to butterfly and let's go of the things that hekd her back so she can become the real her that was meant to be.
Best animation I have ever seen with possibly the worst ending I have ever witnessed. That may be a little strong, but when the camera panned down past the trees I was thinking "don't roll credits, please don't roll the credits" and then it did. Fantastic beginning, spectacular middle, mediocre end. The story made sense up until the last bit. Damn. I'll stop ranting now.
