The interviewer is an a hole. REM means whatever you want it to and the band are so sick of hearing about it. Pete says it stands for 'Rear End Men'.

@UdReks My parents lived in Greece at that time and my dad did a slot on a local radio station, (even though he can't speak any Greek, somebody used to translate what he said and the lyrics!) and he used to play that song and 'The One I Love' for my mother all the time, but nobody listening to the station had heard of them!

This song just rocks live. Yes, I know someone said they had the tracks backing them up but why?
What a great song, one of REM's best.
Guess I can't blame the German crowd. I remember being on a Greek island back in 1990 or 91 when Losing my Religion cam out. They played the fuck out of that song in the dance clubs and bars. And hardly anyone knew REM in Europe even then.

By the way. This TV show is absolute crap. I'm from germany, so I know it. I would never have expected REM on this one ;-)
