My all time favorite opera. I was in the chorus of the Nevada Opera Guild's first USA priemer. Turandot by Puccini is my second favorite with War and Peace by Prokofiev third. Doug Matley

I saw the superb Frank Corsaro production of this at New York City Opera back in the late 90's. Busoni's music should be more widely hailed.

Busoni is one of the greatest composers in history. Motivated only by the need to create beautiful art, his music is untouched by politics or religious dogmas. He composed music for the sake of composing music, and he was a master of the piano for the sake of being a master of the piano.. His name rings with an entirely different energy when compared to the majority of the classical composers. The only other composers I feel are similarly original are Godowsky, Sorabji, and Liszt.

Nobody loved Music more than Busoni.

He did a great job writing the final scenes though, you have to admit...

Wonderful! Dreaming characters wander in a fliud, flowing music.
Text is pure poetry.
Hampson, perfect presence.
You could listen once, twice...to discover new instants.
What do you think about it?
this appears to be the final scene which is not written at all by Busoni - it was written by Jarnach to complete the opera left unfinished by Busoni at the time of his death.

This DVD of Doktor Faust is indeed completed by Jarnach, whom is responsible for the composition of two scenes in the entire opera. (From the liner notes of the DVD.) All in all, the original conception of the opera originates from Busoni and thus he should be credited as the composer of the entire opera. This only available trailer of this DVD is supplied by Arthaus.
