We spotted 6-7 killer whales on 5/8/11 who had killed and devoured part of a gray whale calf when we arrived on the scene. The kill must have been made a few hours beforehand as it takes the orcas a long time to separate the baby gray whale from its mother and kill it by drowning or causing it severe damage. Second time an attack has been documented on mothers day. A sad situation for the gray whales, but this is mother natures's way and that calf will supply sustenance for a variety of different creatures.
We offer great whale watching trips on the Monterey Bay out of Moss Landing harbor, just twenty minutes from Santa Cruz or Monterey.
