the color code i was always taught was, green for ground, black for neutral, white for l1, red for l2, and blue for l3. my supervisor swears up and down that l1 is black, and neutral is white. which way is correct?

He said the battery is disconnected so the machine cannot start, the lugs wont be powered unless the machine is running.

I was taught that the first step is to check switches, than check the present of power on the prongs before touching anything by bare hand :-)
