In 1973 Libyan leader Muammar al-Gaddafi claimed the Gulf of Sidra as territorial waters. Gaddafi named it The Line of Death, crossing this line would invite a military response. The USS John F. Kennedy was deployed near the Libyan coast. Late in the morning on January 4, 1989, Combat Air Patrol station was taken by two F-14A Tomcats belonging to the VF-32 Swordsmen squadron.Due to the presence of the Kennedy battle group near the Libyan coast, pilots were advised to expect some hostilities.

Tensions between Libya and the U.S. were high after the U.S. accused Libya of building a chemical weapons plant near Rabta, causing the U.S. to deploy the USS John F. Kennedy (CV-67) near its coast.

The engagement is known as Gulf of Sidra incident.

  • Did we pick up the downed pilots or did the Libyan pick them up?

  • @Yakko77 Neither.

  • @ZVERCO666 That is what we like to call "Misdirection". However if the Liybian goverment puts out a statement shortly after the incident saying "Two Mig-23's were shot down", I tend to believe both sides are in agreement to the platform used.

My father was an engineer who worked on the AIM 54 phoenix project. 30 years @ Hughes Aircraft in Tucson AZ.

He told me that Our people in Iran removed a vital part on all the AIM 54s before we left the country, thereby disabling the Aim 54s and that no Aim 54 Phoenix missile had ever been fired in combat by the United States or any other country.

  • Smoke that bowgey!!!YEEEEEEEEEEEE.

  • Good use of a flight sim to tell an historical story.

  • THPLASH AND ANGELTHHHHH!!!

  • Haha, If you pause it at 40 seconds in, you can see the Ukrainian trident on the rudder of the "Libyan" mig...

  • In Iran-Iraq war F-14 Tomcats shot down 138 of 165 Iraq plane. 66 with Aim-54

Iran Lost 14 F14, but only 3 were shot down by iraqi plane, 1 was shot down by iran AA, 10 was destroyed by mail function (bad maintenance ) .

To day iran have 60 F14 in their fleet, updated radar, missile...

I think US retire to soon their tomcats, excellent plane, better then SH, with powerful radar...

BEST BIRD IN THE SKY, and i am from Serbia, but thats is truth....
