Is sound source location/beam forming a studio technique or can this be used on lower-budget film sets? Is the price reasonable at this point?

there's actually no such thing as digital audio per se because the only form of noise humans can perceive is analog. Digital refers to the embedded audio stored onto the disc via binary logic.

Interesting research. I hope it is of use to the greater public some day. The musical "soundtrack" to the video was entirely unnecessary and distracting however.
