Mark Hanson from Kanawha, Iowa, unofficially broke the Guinness World Record for the most juggling catches in a minute with three balls.

The world record attempt was held at the National Guard Armory in Mason City, Iowa. It was promoted by the North Iowa Youth Center and held on Saturday, December 17, 2011.

I broke the world record with around 417 catches. We announced it to the Mason City Globe Gazette as 420 catches but after I got home and reviewed the video it was between 415 to 417 catches. It was hard to tell at the event exactly when the timekeeper said stop and I said 140 rounds.

Everything is still unofficial of course. It'll be up to two months before I get an an answer back from Guinness.

My first go at the record netted me 411 catches then I did a 408. Then I did a 414 followed by five screw ups.

My confidence was a little shaky so were my legs so I had to sit on a chair to take my last shot at 420. It's amazing how fast nervous energy can drain your strength. The crowd was showing a little nervousness too.

Everyone really whooped it up when I finished strong with 417 catches.

Here's the explanation as to why I'm counting while juggling.

Because I juggle so fast, 7 catches per second, no one else would be able to count fast enough. I'm counting rounds as I juggle. A round is three throws. I'm only counting every other round which happens to be the dark ball every time it leaves my left hand. I ended up with what I thought was 140 rounds which was multiplied by 3 to get a final count of 420.

My counting is usually very close. In this case we couldn't afford to take the time to watch a video in slow motion in order to make an accurate count, therefore, we used my close-enough count for the announced record. Guinness World Records will decide what the final count will actually be.

  • Very impressive! Do the qualifications for this record specify that it has to be a cascade? My shower is much faster than my cascade, but neither are as fast as yours. I doubt it would matter much with that tight of a pattern, but it might be worth a shot if you ever try to re-break it. Either way, Congratulations!

  • @tricksR4vids The qualifications state than an alternating juggling pattern be used. Cascade and reverse cascade patterns obviously qualify.

I'm planning on breaking the record again someday, assuming Guinness certifies this one first of course. I have a few speed modifications that I'm working on that could add 10 to 15 catches to my final tally.

But going faster in practice is one thing, doing it in front of 200 spectators with a Guinness record on the line is another.

  • Hi Truemanization2,

    Thanks for your response.

After reviewing the video in slow-motion the number of catches that I came up with is around 416. The final count will be up to Guinness. I'll post their official tally when I receive it.

    Regards,

    Mark

  • wow you are a great mark! :)

  • And i thought i was good

  • @tricksR4vids It wouldn't necessarily have to be a cascade, but I assume the SiteSwap for the pattern would have to be 3.
