In 1989, I was living in a beautiful apartment in San Francisco. As I lived my peaceful life there, events around the world were revving into high gear. In that one year, we saw the Chinese students rally at Tiananmen Square, the peaceful fall of the Berlin Wall, The Velvet Revolution in Czechoslovakia, the fall of Communism throughout Eastern Europe, and the release from prison of Nelson Mandela in South Africa ushering in the fall of Apartheid. Yes, it was truly an amazing year.

One night I was watching Channel 2, and this beautiful piece was aired, created by Bob Hirschfeld. He edited together these stunning events over the music from Les Miserables, "Do You Hear The People Sing." The piece was so moving, even today, twenty years later, it brings me to tears.

On the twenty year anniversary of all these historic events, I felt compelled to share it.

Let us keep working towards peace in the world and peace in our time.

  • beautiful video and song. a truly amazing time, and an incredible turning point in modern history.

  • Hi Rusty--

I hate to withdraw such praise, but it wasn't me who edited the piece. I was the only Bob Hirschfeld at KTVU in 1989. I don't remember the clip, but I assume it was done by Bob Shaw, an outstanding editor, who unfortunately died far too young a while back.
