One of the main tasks of the Pacific Hydrological Cycle Observing System (or Pacific HYCOS) is to increase hydrological monitoring capacity in the Pacific Islands by installing monitoring stations and training local staff in operational hydrology. In this video Llyod Smith takes us through the construction and use of a bank operated cableway system on the Tabercheding River in Palau, and a standard bridge gauging. Such methods are essential for gauging river flows particularly at higher flows. Pacific HYCOS is part of the Pacific Islands Applied Geoscience Commission (SOPAC).
