Yale University's Thomas Murray performed the Prelude in G minor in 1989.

The world-reknowned instrument is one of the great works of G. Donald Harrison & Aeolian-Skinner. It's a V/147/206.

Again, very few internet pix of the organ or the Tabernacle, so I've had to resort to some artsy stuff for filler.

The music is from a CD of an analog tape of an air check of a live concert, so you can imagine what effect those re-incarnations have had on sound quality.

  • Oh good, somebody has transcribed this, now I don't have to do it on my own!

  • Gottfried Federlein did this one -- back in 1923. G Schirmer published it.

  • is this from Thomas Murray's cd "The Transcriber's Art"?

  • Nope. The Transcribers Art (which includes the Rachmaninov piece) was recorded at Woolsey Hall/Yale University. This recording was taken from an old radio broadcast.

  • Trust me, I've seen and hear many-an-accomplished pianist sit down at an organ, and they struggle as if it was their first time playing any keyboard instrument. It requires a completely different technique, touch, pedaling, and a vast knowledge of stops and tone colors. Pianists are a dime a dozen. A good organist is hard to come by.

  • first time I've ever heard this composer! absolute splendid playing!

post more vids if you can :]!

  • Sergei Rachmaninov was in the process of writing a piece for Organ & Orchestra at the time of his death for his friend Charles Courboin who was appointed to the post at St. Patrick's Cathedral in NYC. It's too bad it never came to pass.

  • robertgift is right

horrible to play this piano piece on organ

  • I love it!!!! The first time I've heard it was yesterday, at concert in Święta Lipka. This transcription is excellent, I think.

  • Thanks!

If anybody knows where I can purchase a copy, send me a link!

  • Many people feel that the organ renditioin of this piece take away from Rachmaninov's composition. Music is meant to be enjoyed and if this piece being played on the king of instruments is enjoyed by only a few then Rachmaninov has accomplished his goals in writing this composition. It is wonderful, Love it

  • thanks.

  • Is there an mp3 of this organ version of this somewhere?

  • like horns n stuff... huh?
