Man I miss walking that path to the hidden onsen. We use to take the Bus from the Dorms(APU campus) and get off there, and Hike up there. Before we hiked we usually took Oita Kotsu to Marishoku to get food and drinks and then get on campus adn take kamenoi bus to start the hike :D there are 4 in that area that are hidden onsens. But the one you went to is the best!! :D
