Evicted squatters clashed with Peruvian police on Monday — to protest their eviction from a settlement in the southern town of San Jose de Chilca.
A major highway remained closed for two hours as riot police used tear gas to clear the protesters who had blocked traffic with stones and drums.
Police Chief Wilfredo Gonzales:

"This is a crime which police has to fight against. We cannot allow such an important highway like Panamericana Sur to be blocked for any reason."
Officials announced the squatters would be evicted this week — but settlers claim to have a court order allowing them to occupy the land for the next 20 years.
The squatters said they would continue to fight the eviction from a land they claim to have occupied since 1973.
