A test to see which relatively-modern games will run on this netbook. I give you Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. Yes, you see me die a lot here. To my defense, I don't play FPS games.

*Basic Specs:
- Intel Atom D525 @ 1.8 GHz (dual-core, 2x 512 kB L2 cache)
- NVIDIA ION 2 (512 MB, Optimus technology)
- 2 GB DDR3 memory (800 MHz)
- Windows 7 Home Premium (32-bit)
- 1366x768 pixels maximum resolution
- BIOS updated to revision 0605
- ION driver updated to version 266.58

*Running Apps:
Yahoo Messenger, uTorrent, Avast (Silent/Gaming Mode), Fraps

*NVIDIA settings:
Triple Buffering (enabled), Maximum Pre-rendered frames (2), others on default

GRAPHIC SETTINGS:
Video Mode - 1280x720

TEXTURE SETTINGS:

*Framerate: ~5 to 57 fps
*Playability: Unplayable to Smooth

*Remarks:
The game runs very well most of the time, averaging around 24 to 33 fps on high graphics (with majority of effects turned on) and native resolution. Large environments with too much mayhem naturally brings these numbers down to about 7 to 13 fps. Darker scenes produce a bit more frames, I think. The yitch3 config file makes the game run smooth even on low hardware, and smoothness remains even on busy scenes. Although, you sacrifice the graphics a lot. Audio also on high settings.

You may be able to add a few more frames by doing the usual stuff: like lowering the settings, closing unnecessary processes, updating the graphics driver further, defragmenting the HDD, overclocking CPU/GPU, upgrading Windows 7 to 64-bit and make full use of the max 4 GB memory capacity, downgrading to Windows XP for an optimized, less demanding OS, among others.

You can grab the yitch3.cfg file here:

  • @7Sn1per I just finished U2 recently, and that's probably because I also got a PS3 quite recently. U3 looks terrific, but I'm not sure I'm gonna buy it day one. I might wait a little. I only play the story anyway. Planning to get that Zelda Skyward Sword special bundle first. What do you mean BF3's gonna cost 5 dollars?

  • @thugsnw Hehe, I'm terrible at them, eventually I get a couple good matches in. Played Uncharted 2, I have 1 sitting here, hate that damn sneaking missing [RAGE!!]

Battlefield 3's only going to cost 5 dollars too :D

  • @7Sn1per Oh, cool. As much as I like shooters, I'm bad at them. I'm getting BF3 as well -- probably on both consoles. The beta's gonna end later, which means there are only a few weeks til the retail (yay). Uncharted's awesome, too. The only GTA I liked was Chinatown Wars for the DS, and GTA-esque titles Bully and LA Noire.

  • @thugsnw All kinds of games, CoD4, MW2. BC1 [Not that much, maybe played it like twice.] I'm also getting BF3, I also have GTA4, but I haven't played it alot.

  • @7Sn1per Ah, so I guess you want a gaming notebook for portability benefits. Yeah, sure. You can PM your PSN ID and I'll add you when I get home. What games do you play there by the way?

  • @thugsnw I have a PS3, wanna add me?

  • @7Sn1per Or you can get a PS3 or a 360, don't have to worry about specs, and play games that'll be out within 4 or 5 more years (and those that were out before that). Of course, PC exclusives are out, though.

  • @thugsnw Yeah, I just made a build list, costs 207 bucks, it doesn't include the GPU because I already have one. Could run CoD4, aIW and BC2, which is all I need. I'm TOO POOR THOUGH!

  • @7Sn1per Oh. Well, the best you can do is probably get a second hand gaming netbook or notebook. If you're keen on just building something you can game on and not necessarily portable, you can try building a gaming desktop. Someone posted the list of components needed, and I think the sum is almost $300. The guy claimed it can even run Battlefield 3 on decent settings. I think the netbook you have now can run Portal good enough, youtube(dot)com/watch?v=9ilsirII6_4

  • @thugsnw Eh, problem is my budget. I can only afford at most a 300 dollar one. Tell me where to find a 300 dollar half-gaming laptop and I'll be happy.
