I understood it met they were good I just never hear people talk about grades of playing ability and how to measure it and whatnot.
Usually it's just "Wow he is really fucking good/technical," or "he suxx0rz."

The grades are a series of examinations in an instrument of your choice, used to demonstrate an extensive understanding of both the instrument in question and the structure and composition of music. Grade 8 being the highest formal exam, they are as good as they are technically going to get, all that follows is experience.
