My grandpa has a 1950 farmall M and the thing runs like a top, darn good tractor! love it, its so much fun to drive, she has her share of scratches and dings, but thats beacuse we use her!
I'm not overly familiar with that unit, but i would bet that the thicker gaskets changed the clearences inside. Without looking at it i couldnt say, but if you need thinner gasket try cutting one out of a paper plate and use a little form-a-gasket, done that before. Or make sure that the new gaskets didnt get out of place/disturted during reassambly, i had that happen putting an oil pump in once and when i was done i had no oil pressure. I'm assuming it worked before you took it apart though.
I feel the same way. As soon as I could push in the stiff clutch on our M, I was old enough to start helping Papa in the fields. I learned, and I mean learned clutch on that M!
Just subscribed to Red Power Magazine btw. I'm reworking a 400. I put new seals in the Behlen power steering earlier this evening and I get no response. When I pulled it apart the gaskets were shot and I noticed they were very, very thin. I thought I could use thicker gasket sheet but I guess not. The manual says something about how the gears should be able to shift. I guess my gaskets are too thick. Any thoughts?
Yep, my 400 loves running the little square baler... It's mainly a puller, but people won't believe me when I tell them it still works on the farm every year all summer. Maybe push a gallon an hour bailing. No more than 3 when discing with it (no power steering so that doesn't happen very often).
i have 1951 farmall m it was the last tractor off the warshaw plant in ohio

I just bailed some hay with one of those today except it was a lot more rusty and harder to start.
