The piece itself (called "Shah Jahan") was originally "written" (played extemporaneously) by Paul Horn on his "Inside the Taj Mahal" album. I have re-played it here and added still images - animated using Sony Vegas video and sound editing software.

Inside the Taj Mahal is acknowledged as being the seminal album that gave Paul Horn the title ... Father of New Age Music. When it came on the scene, it opened a door for music with a more peaceful or spiritual essence. It revolutionized the direction of music for years to come. His two Taj Mahal recordings, made over twenty years apart in the legendary shrine, are his most famous and successful.

  • Wonderful job, wonderful long notes... I think I am going to start devoting my playing to long notes again... I guess musicians tend to walk away from them because it's just harder to master, but you seem to do it perfectly! :)

  • I think I've only really started doing long tones in the last couple of years. (I spent a few years arpeggiating all the chords to learn them - thus lots of short notes). I never practise long tones separately - always within a song of some kind, or part of an exercise - more fun.

  • I hate shah jahan

  • great music

  • hey, i'm just wondering if shah jahan ever produces children with his other wife. because no essay (the ones i know) ever mention them. I thank you for helping me.

  • @WoodwindMusic

Thanks for the tip. Haven't got the electronics figured out yet. Also, this one is a bit too reverb-y.

  • @jazzflutist Hi feeling is there..nice why not find a place with natural acoustics..much better than bad electronics--try a Zoom H4n recorder and 2 matched stereo mikes--you'll be amazed--very cheap to buy these days...I also played with Paul Horn many moons ago--a true master!!!!

  • It was me playing padleynj, nobody else. Just a straight recording using cheap equipment, with some reverb added using Sound Forge 9.

  • I really do not know who was playng here? Sounds good, the range seems to be controlled by open holes and some alternate fingerings..please let me know. I would only guess at the electronics used..I do not know!!! thnx, walter

  • I used a Raven microphone to a Soundblaster soundcard (cheap one) with the flute at about 2 inches from the mic. Then apply reverb using Sound Forge. The flute is not my favorite, but will do. The headjoint of the flute is custom made (of 18k gold no less) in what's called a butterfly design. Gives more depth to low notes. The Paul Horn "composition" I think was in fact an extemporaneous (sp?) improvisation inside the Taj Mahal.
