Still, compare it to what the Doctor has had to face (the reality bom and time-war-era daleks), as well as the things the TARDIS can do (it even once made it snow and IT CAN TOW THE EARTH WHEREVER IT WANTS TO GO).

It takes a show like Doctor Who, but it CAN be made justifiable to give a character something as overpowered as the sonic. (Also, he had 900+ years to make it do all those little things it can do).

Plus, it's not unstoppable.

Some guy stole the TARDIS and went back in time to ban the sonic screwdriver before it even appeared on the show.

Perhaps that's why the show got the idea.
