The Flåm Railway

Discover the Flåm Railway - an incredible train journey from the mountain station Myrdal on the Bergen Railway down to Flåm station nested in the innermost corner of the Aurlandfjord. Nowhere in the world do adhesion railcars on normal tracks have a steeper journey than on the Flåm Railway.

The work on the Flåm branch line started in 1923 and was opened temporarily for steam trains in 1940 and for electric trains in 1944.

To cope with the enormous change in hight over such a short stretch, the track runs partly through tunnels with spiral in and out of the mountainside.

Almost 80 % of the railway line has a gradient of 55 %, the equivalent of 1: 18.

The train takes about one hour to cover the 20-kilometer long track through the steep and narrow Flåm valley. With view towards mighty waterfalls and mountain peaks the train travels slowly and even stops at the most scenic spots like the Kjosfossen waterfall.

The Flåm Railway stop on request at 8 stops if passengers like to leave or enter the train to walk part of the valley. Myrdal/Vatnahalsen-area is an easy walk and you enter a later train at Vatnahalsen down to Flåm. From Myrdal/Vatnahalsen there is a marked track all the way down to Flåm (5 hours) or walk to Berekvam (2-2,5 hours) and take the train to Flåm.

You might also take a bike on the train from Flåm to Myrdal and bike back to Flåm (appr. 2 hours).
The train is running 4 times a day October - April to 10 times a day May - september. Most trains connection with the Bergen railway.
