Arriving into Union Station, L.A 7 hours late. BNSF 4149 was leading the Chief #3.

  • OK the 3rd p-42 is not running at all. the 2nd unit is providing HEP and the BNSF and the 1st P-42 are running

  • how did you know? by noise of engine?

  • the 2nd p-42 is the loudest of the engines so its running in HEP mode. the 3rd unit is making no noise. the bnsf and the first p-42 sound the same

  • thats when the prime mover(engine) is running at a fixed RPM to drive the hotel power generator to provide lights a/c and heat to the cars.

  • whats HEP mode?

  • P42 #113 (The third one) was "dead in consist.

    When that happened, attempts to start the second engine, #116, failed. Then the train limped on with only one engine,#93. Later the leaser BNSF engine was added.

  • what happened to Southwest Chief? Did it run out of fuel?
