Elgar: The Man behind the Mask: Friday 12 November 2010

At the 2010 Golden Prague International Television Festival held in Prague in October, ELGAR: THE MAN BEHIND THE MASK won the Czech Crystal award for Best Documentary.

The judges praised 'a beautifully crafted film' and said its use of archive material was 'exemplary'. It won its category against more than sixty other documentaries about music or dance.

The film's writer and producer, John Bridcut, said he was 'excited that Elgar's music has received such generous acknowledgement in the Czech Republic, which is proof that Elgar's music travels well'. He also paid tribute to 'the BBC's enthusiasm for commissioning films of this range and complexity, which are central to the BBC's public service remit, and which renew its own long-standing commitment to artistic ambition'.

The film has been selected for screening at this year's Sheffield Doc/Fest. It will be shown at 12.50pm on Saturday 6 November, which will be its premiere showing.

Its broadcast premiere is on BBC Four at 7.30pm on Friday 12 November. It will be screened on the BBC's HD channel shortly afterwards (date to be announced).
