STORY:
Japanese car makers want to make a car suitable for senior citizens.
Nissan's Associate Chief Designer says that this specially designed suit helps improve functionality and accessibility within cars. Young designers wear the suit to better understand the needs of elderly drivers.
[Etsuhiro Watanabe, Nissan Associate Chief Designer]:
"By using the aging suit, our designers get to experience what it's like for the elderly to drive."
Nissan says the suit and glasses help decide dashboard angling andvisibility, as well as driver space and support. Another designer at Nissan, after going for a test drive, admitted that it's very difficult to drive with the suit on.
[Naoki Yamamoto, Nissan Designer]:
"You lose the freedom you are accustomed to, and while you can move, there are limitations on mobility, such as turning the steering wheel or switching on the blinker."
However this type of design technology is not just for the elderly. It is useful in helping larger drivers who also have space and mobility needs.
