One of the community members that spoke, Jeff Cline, brought up the issue of books in the school system's libraries that he found objectionable. "I would not allow a kid on the football team or in the dugout to repeat what is in these books," said Cline, "If we are going to throw a Bible out of the school and throw a good Christian man out of the school, then we need to clean up the stuff that's in it."

President of the school board, Ian Watson, responded to Cline's comments by pointing out that "Request for review of materials or course content" forms were available.

Four people spoke concerning the intent to fire teacher John Freshwater by the Mount Vernon city school board at their September 8, 2008 meeting.
