John Hegley reads his favourite childhood poem, Tarantella by Hilaire Belloc.
Imagine, the UKs brightest childrens festival, fills Southbank Centre with wonderful readings, storytelling and poetry featuring some of todays leading childrens writers, as well as comedy, visual arts, magic and music.
I love John Hegley and I love this poem. It's clear how much Hegley draws upon Belloc in all his work, and its great to hear his interpretation of a famous Belloc poem here. Hegley conveys the incredible linguistic density of this poem in an oxymoronically light and digestible way that is reminiscent of what is best about his own poetry. Every tought interweving of the verse seems to make it more accesible in hegley's hands. This is true reading of poetry.
