Java is the current most popular language, it is simpler than c++, but it is also slower, however programs written in java can be used on a mac, on windows, and on linux (most distributions anyway)

perl is a scripting language meaning it is not compiled, we humans can run a program in our heads with a scratch piece of paper, programs can do this to, this language is great for if you have a whole lot of data that you need to process quickly, and it is a good language to know if you want to make a website

python is also a scripting language, only it is good for games instead of websites

basic is a great language for beginners

C is good for low level things, especially communicating with hardware

Fortran was the first compiler language, and is still used today for science applications thanks to it's ability to work so well with numbers

COBOL (common business language) is also a very early language, but it is still used today

SQL is a language that is used for databases

javascript and cold fusion are both used for returning forms to a website

assembly is the fastest and most efficient language, but it is not good for a beginner, and takes forever to debug

C# was developed by microsoft, that is all I know about it

Shell scripting is good for installing programs

and Ruby is good for if you want to handle forms being returned by websites

Im looking to program something that deals with databases, such as usernames, passwords, data about the user.

  • @ElliotLakeCanada it sounds like you are talking about making a website, if that is the case: you would want linux, apache, mysql, and php

  • I think you did a great job!
