SXSW Music Festival, 2006--Austin, TX: If there's one thing you can't miss about Criteria's 2005 release, When We Break, it's the 10-foot wall of guitars. As many bands know from experience, getting guitars to sound big--detailed and layered, yet without losing immediacy or impact--takes some serious chops, both on the fret board and the mixing board. For the recording buffs at Gearwire, the question was obvious: how did they do it?
We caught up with frontman Stephen Pedersen, bassist/recordist AJ Mogis, and guitarist Aaron Druery on the day of their SXSW showcase gig at the Parish, one of the many live venues on Austin's 6th St. Conversation ranged from Stephen's "basement world" of guitars, amps, and a ProTools HD1 setup; to AJ's Presto! studio (where he records Criteria and lots of other bands you should check out); to the gear and techniques used by Druery and drummer Mike Sweeny to drive the band's hard-hitting sound.
