Australians are well known for been lovers of sport and all things outdoors, so when a good physical challenge comes along, you can be sure there'll be lots of willing participants. Our Melbourne bureau brings us this montage of a special challenge that lets participants prove their toughness, take a look.
The event is the 'Tough Bloke Challenge', it's essentially a cross-country run with some man made obstacles in the way.
[Gary Farebrother, Co-organizer, Tough Bloke Challenge]:
"Think of an army assault course and you won't be too far wrong, but it's a lot of fun because there are other obstacles thrown in, which is the mud pit, ad the 'hell's gate', which is the toughest challenge on the course. The hell's gate is basically a rope suspended three meters off the ground, which people have to crawl across to get to the other side."
[Monty Husen, Tough Bloke Challenge Participant]:
"I'm a little bit nervous about the hell's gate, and hopefully I'll make it without falling down."
[Shane Mitchell, Tough Bloke Challenge Participant]:
"Anything where we can compete, that's got to make you a tough bloke ... To get dirty as hell and have a hell of a lot of fun, it should be good, a bit of a physical challenge and just a day out in the sun ... It's supposedly a six kay run, and I don't think I've never run six kays in my life, so I could still be here this time next week."
[Cheryl Hill, Tough Bloke Challenge Participant]:
"Yeah, leading up to it I was a little bit nervous because I didn't know what to expect, so I was freaking myself out a little bit, but anything a guy can do a girl can do better."
[Sara Collis, Tough Bloke Challenge Participant]:
"I actually really struggled through the whole thing ... I think it's the run up the hills that is actually the hardest part."
[Monty Husen, Tough Bloke Challenge Participant]:
"The hell's gate was I guess daunting me, but I got through that. There was a stage there where I thought 'jeez, this is hard' but I pushed through and just used that extra bit of courage to get me through and I'm happy about it."
[Gary Farebrother, Co-organizer, Tough Bloke Challenge]:
"Iike any event, there is an element of risk, but you just have to race within your ability and you'll have a great day out."
