One of my very favorite films for a rather long time, The Black Stallion (1979) is directed by Carol Ballard and produced and funded by Francis Ford Coppolla. With this score by Ford Coppola's neice, Carmine Coppola, the movie is so much more than a family movie, and brings to the table cinematography by Caled Deschanel that rivels that of 2001: A Space Odyssey. With the first half hour holding no more than a few pages of dialogue it is the music, cinematography, direction and acting by young Kelly Reno (who plays Alec) that takes centre stage.
Once the film moves to America it does not lose its beauty, as it so easily could have done, but rather continues to build on itself, adding an enjoyable performance by Teri Garr as Alec's over-protective mother and one of Mickey Rooney's best screen appearances as The Black's trainer. The end race is one of my favorite climaxes in a movie.

Call it a horse movie if you want to, but I think The Black Stallion is something so much more beautiful than that.
Music 5/5 Film 5/5. (Most of the things I post are this rating: that is why I post them!)
Note: Sorry the music trails off at the end...it was hard enough to find this long a version!

  • the music here - Not good - if you have heard the BLACK STALLION 2 score then this is nothing compared to what Delerue archieved

  • @Marcatolegato

I have heard the full score of The Black Stallion Sequel, and yes, it is a beautiful score. Georges Delerue is a master at scores such as that one. However, to say that the beauty of that score in any way impunes the beauty of this is very wrong. This is a great piece of music, and not only this but all the pieces from the original Black Stallion.

They are both great soundtracks, and it is completely unneccessary to put one or the other down whatsoever.

  • i dont know why, but this soundtrack somehow makes me forget about all my troubles *-*

    i wonder why...

  • It does for me too...

  • One of the most impressive children's films of all time and certainly one of the most underrated and unrecognized.

  • Well said.

  • Has been one of my top 5 movies of all time since it came out. Caleb Deschanel's cinematography, Carmine Coppola's score, smart direction and natural performances all add up to sheer poetry. I had high hopes for War Horse, but it was disappointingly corny and heavy handed. Black Stallion remains a great film, a true piece of art.

  • This score has a more exoitc taste to it to add to the movie.

  • Probably the one piece of music that is guaranteed to lower my blood pressure almost the instant it begins playing.

  • it's so good

    as my name Stallion

  • I love it.. This is my favourite movie of all time! <3

  • When i hear this music, my mind only goes to LOST. Man I miss that show

  • What a wonderful horse the filmhorse was..can't believe he could ever die. ._.
