I just had to do this given the fact this music piece is legendary and makes best use of both the Master System's PSG and YM2413 chips. For this variant, I used samples from the Megadrive's YM2612 chip (including percussion) and its PSG chip (for authenticity, as the SMS and MD's PSG chip is identical) alongside the NES' sound processing chip. It may not be the best version of the theme out there, but I enjoyed recreating this piece in an experimental style I enjoy, so I hope that you all enjoy it too. ^_^

The movie itself is a video dump of the SMS BIOS V2.1J. The Japanese text reads "Please turn the system off and insert some software", thus is only accessible when you have no Cartridge and Power Card inserted into the system.

  • is this the FM or the PCM version?

  • @onecreativecriminal Neither, this is a rendition using FM and RP2A07 instruments. However, the original theme uses the YM2413 chip found in the original Sega Master System.

  • Doesn't a Master System start playing a game even without loading a game in the first place?

  • @HoneycombAgent Some do have built-in games, but I think those were the Western Master System II units and not the Japanese Master System units.

  • I'd like to see someone put up the game gear version of the Space Harrier theme since that's the version I have nostalgia for.

  • @VZMkII I'm sure there are plenty of videos for both the PSG only version (used in the SMS & GG games) and the PSG/FM version (SMS BIOS) floating everywhere on YouTube.

There was a YouTuber by the name of benanderson88 who did a wonderful remake of the SMS BIOS version using the same chips. It's a shame he's no longer around. =/

I like this tune best of all, including original one.

  • @tomatzu - You hit the nail on the head!

You forgot something though, there's that few RARE videos that have this bios demo without the FM chip - I managed to find one of the uploads!

So, yeah, there's three versions technically on the SMS/GG games - one used in the actual games, one used in the SMS J-Bios 2.1 with two variations - one with PSG, one with PSG/FM Enhanced. Yuh, the ones used in the games are different to the PSG-only bios sounds! If you like I'll send you a video!

  • @tomatzu - That makes absoloute sense, hence why their sounds are different to one another.

  • @Braddo82 @FieraDevilWings Correct. This is a redux using samples from both the YM2612 and RP2A03 chips. The PSG chip used in the Megadrive is exactly the same as the one used in the Master System, only that the FM Chips were different in both systems.

  • @Braddo82 - You do realise that this video was a redux of the original from the SMS JP 2.1 bios into NES sounds?

Not unlike how the bios itself was a redux of the Space Harrier "Moot" theme iteslf.
