Since i have it, im really into the new John Mayer album called Battle Studies (simply perfect music, i love it), but after listening to Assassin for about 60 times in two days i thought i take a little pause and listen to something i haven't for a while. So i threw in Greg Howe's Soundproof album, which i never liked to be honest...yet.
I listened to it all day and things changed radically. So much, that i got inspired very much by the groove and made a backing track of the song Soundproof by cutting a piece from the intro and looping it.

Here is the result. Again a full improvisation take, far far away from perfect, but a great practice to keep the groove tightly, which is crucially important and often overlooked(!), and keeping it interesting for 4 minutes over one harmony, and still keeping the stylistic elements. You can't imagine how difficult it is. It could be a daily routine, for players to jam a few times over a track like this with a really simple but tight groove. I have done it a few times when i got inspired by Greg or Richie Kotzen and it can really really boost your playing, one of the best ways to improve!

I played through a VOX Tonelab ST multieffect porcessor going into a micpre (just because it is always connected to my soundcard and didn't want to mess with the cables) going directly into the soundcard. Pretty good sound by a 250$ processor isn't it?

  • Seriously, you're phrasing is amazing. How did you start incorporating that into your playing? I've been playing for years and can't seem to develop good improv phrases

  • @frishdawgs Thank you very much bro! The technical part can be learned by anybody, but the key to good improvisation is to have a "musical fantasy". So if you know what you want to pay and can sing the melody in your head, you are almost there. It is great to listen to other musicians that guitar players, horn players singers and such and try to learn some lines from them , they phrase a really different way than guitar players do. I listened to a lot of groovy RnB and pop when i did this vid.

  • where is the tab for this? hehe

  • @simplemelodia unfortunately this track is too long for an improv solo so i couldnt avoid repeating a lot of licks a lot of times when i ran out of ideas so you can get them by ear pretty easily :)

  • Hey man. I loved the mods that u did o your guitar. Are u playing a Rx 20? What pickups are u using? I really like that look H/S. Great playing by the way.

  • @ggperes thanks man! they are a Duncan JB in the bridge and a Dimarzio Cruiser dp187 (bridge version) at the neck position

  • what are the settings! it sounds amazing!
